Nathalie Tocci
Deputy Director, Instituto Affari Internazionali
Nathalie Tocci is Deputy Director of Istituto Affari Internazionali, Editor of the International Spectator and special adviser to HR Federica Mogherini, and she is also in charge of outreaching to think tanks and the coordination of work on a new European Security Strategy. Previously she held research positions at the Centre for European Policy Studies, Brussels, the Transatlantic Academy, Washington and the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies, Florence. Her research interests include European foreign policy, conflict resolution, the Middle East and the Mediterranean. Her major publications include Turkey and the European Union, (Palgrave Macmillan, 2015) (co-author); Multilateralism in the 21st Century. (London and New York, Routledge, 2013) (co-editor), Turkey’s European Future: Behind the Scenes of America’s Influence on EU-Turkey Relations, (New York and London, New York University Press,2011) (author); The EU and Conflict Resolution, Routledge, (London, 2007) (author); and “EU Accession Dynamics and Conflict Resolution: Catalyzing Peace or Consolidating Partition in Cyprus?”, (Ashgate, Aldershot, 2004) (author). Nathalie is the 2008 winner of the Anna Lindh Award for the Study of European Foreign Policy.
Charles Gati
Senior Research Professor of European and Eurasian Studies
Charles Gati is a senior fellow in the Foreign Policy Institute and a professorial lecturer of Russian and Eurasian Studies at the Johns Hopkins University´s Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS). His books include Failed Illusions: Moscow, Washington, Budapest, and the 1956 Hungarian Revolt and The Bloc That Failed: Soviet–East European Relations in Transition.
Dr. Gati was a former senior advisor with the Policy Planning Staff of the U.S. Department of State and a former professor at Union College and Columbia University. His books Failed Illusions: Moscow, Washington, Budapest and the 1956 Hungarian Revolt (2006) and Hungary and the Soviet Bloc(1986) were honored with the Marshall Shulman Prize for outstanding books on the international relations of the former Soviet bloc by the Association for Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies (he is the only author to have won this prize twice). His most recent work, released in 2013, is titled ZBIG: The Strategy and Statecraft of Zbigniew Brzezinski. Dr. Gati also leads the bi-weekly, non-credit Current Events series for EES concentrators and other interested students at SAIS.
