Africa

It is the third largest continent, which owns about 7.5% of the world’s oil reserves, 7.1% of the world’s gas reserves, about 6% of the worldʼs coal reserves and 20% of the worldʼs uranium reserves. The term “the Scramble for Africa” refers to the period of intense penetration of European powers into Africa started by the Berlin Conference (1884/1885), which in 20 years resulted in the European domination of almost the entire continent. The “new fight” then refers to several powers’ recent growing rivalry over interests in Africa, which was caused in particular by the growing influence of the new regional powers, led by the PRC. Africa is often constrained by instability, corruption, violence and authoritarian regimes.
