Forum on Editing and Publishing in Political Science and International Relations Journals in Central and Eastern Europe

There are surprisingly many PolSci and IR journals in Central and Eastern Europe. What is their role and purpose? How do they deal with the semiperipheral position in the international academic field? Our researcher and editor of the Czech Journal of International Relations Jan Daniel co-edited a Debate in the European Political Science journal which tackles these questions.
In the latest issue of European Political Science, a collection of articles titled Editing and Publishing in Political Science and International Relations Journals in Central and Eastern Europe has been published. The forum, edited by Jan Daniel and Aleš Karmazin, offers an insight into the functioning of academic journals in the region – from their historical development to the contemporary challenges of balancing local needs with international standards.
The authors of the individual studies focus on specific cases from various countries:
-
Romania: Luciana Alexandra Ghica and Claudiu D. Tufiș trace the development and role of Romanian political science journals.
-
Czech Republic: Ladislav Cabada, Martin Jirušek and Martina Varkočková describe the vicious circle in which Czech political science and international relations journals find themselves.
-
Serbia and Slovenia: Marko Kovačević, Filip Ejdus, Nemanja Džuverović and Rok Zupančič present their experience of building the Journal of Regional Security – a journal founded on the periphery of the academic world.
-
Poland: Małgorzata Madej examines how a Polish scholarly journal navigates the tension between national and global requirements.
The concluding article, again written by Jan Daniel and Aleš Karmazin, summarises the key findings and highlights how the publication of political science and international relations journals in the region operates across national, regional, and international scales.
