    Balkans
“The Balkans” is a geopolitical designation of the region of Southeast Europe. In the last roughly 150 years, this area has aroused the interest of great powers though the term “Balkan” has often been used pejoratively. Recently, the EU institutions coined the term “Western Balkans” to denote the Southeast European countries that are not members of the Union.
