The Bulgarian Factor in North Macedonia’s Elections and EU Prospects
How could the results of the North Macedonian election affect the country’s possible EU membership? In her recent article for GMF our researcher Asya Metodieva explains the ways the victory of VMRO-DPMNE party could be crucial for North Macedonia’s EU membership negotiations.
"Bulgaria has demanded that North Macedonia include its ethnic Bulgarian minority in the constitution as one of the state’s founding peoples. This change in the constitution was included into the EU accession process. VMRO-DPMNE has instrumentalized the fear of another Bulgarian veto. The party says that it will continue to block the change and, with it, North Macedonia’s EU perspective.”
