Russia is an important player in the whole of Eurasia and has recently begun to project its power even beyond this vast continent. The events in Ukraine in 2014 led to the unprecedented confrontation between the West and Moscow. Despite these security dynamics, Russia remains an important partner in the energy sector for the European Union, including the Czech Republic. Nevertheless, even this sector of cooperation is now undergoing securitization. The Russian economy still heavily depends on the export of energy sources and is very sensitive to oil price fluctuations.
