Workshop: The Power of the European Council

We are pleased to invite you to a workshop entitled “The Power of the European Council” exploring the role of the European Council in the EU’s institutional system and its influence on European policymaking. The workshop will be led by Dr Lucas Schramm from Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich.

18. 11. 2026 (17:00)

Language: English Institute of International Relations Prague (Nerudova 257/3, Prague 1)

Policy experts rank the European Council as the EU’s single most powerful institution. At the same time, they place it only third when allocating authority in a preferred system of EU institutional checks and balances. Dr Schramm will present findings of an expert survey on the role of EU institutions, showing the perceived strengths and weaknesses of the European Council as one of the EU bodies.

The presentation will be followed by a discussion moderated by Mats Braun, Director of the Institute of International Relations Prague.

Speaker:

Dr Lucas Schramm is a political scientist and researcher at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. His research focuses on European integration, EU institutions and crisis politics, with particular attention to the European Council and the role of member states in shaping EU policymaking.
