Using behavioural warning signs to detect planned terrorist attacks

In the prevention of terrorist attacks, it is commonly expected that those who have the strongest radical ideas, will also be more likely to act on their ideas.

In this talk, Astrid Bastiaens will discuss why it might be more promising to rely on behavioural signs of attack planning. She will discuss a novel threat assessment instrument focused on using warning signs to detect planned attacks called LATERAN-IT.

The instrument has been recently applied to the foiled attack on the Taylor Swift concert in Vienna as a case study. Further research on the instrument will be addressed

Astrid Bastiaens is a PhD candidate at Maastricht University. Her research focuses on the validation of a threat assessment instrument for terrorist attacks. She brings her background of forensic psychology to this research theme and her experience and expertise on risk assessment methods in forensic psychology bring new insights to risk and threat assessment practices in the terrorism field.
