Czech-Russian Relations 1989–2012

Petra Kuchyňková, Petr Kratochvíl and Boris Shmelev are the authors of a chapter in the publication "Russia and East Central Europe after the Cold War: A Fundamentally Transformed Relationship" (edited by Andrei Zagorski), which was a joint project of Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung and the Institute of World Economy and International Relations (IMEMO).

This book reviews and documents the transformation of the bilateral relations between the East Central European countries and Russia in the period between the end of the Cold War and the outbreak of the current Ukraine crisis. It proceeds from the overhaul of the fundamentals of these relations following the collapse of communism in Europe. It then continues by assessing the effects of the ECE countries’ accession to NATO and the EU, and of the attempts at a reconciliation and an economization of their bilateral relations with Russia. The general overview of the transformation of the relationship(s) is followed by seven more specific chapters dealing with individual ECE countries, and a review of the evolution of the trade and economic relations of the ECE nations with Russia after the dissolution of the Soviet bloc.
