Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine has raised questions about the future of Germany’s erstwhile social democratic Eastern policy. Expert, Ian Klinke will examine whether the war in Ukraine has caused lasting damage to Ostpolitik by revisiting its geopolitical foundations and tracing its gradual decline over the past decade. This talk will explore how German politics and society today navigate sitting on the fault line between Atlanticism, Ostpolitik, and Geopolitik. Is Germany now at a turning point in its foreign policy direction?

Ian Klinke is Associate Professor in Human Geography at the University of Oxford and a fellow of St John’s College, specialising in the history of geopolitics from the late nineteenth century to the present. In 2023, he was awarded a British Academy mid-career fellowship and in 2023/4 he was a visiting researcher at the Danish Institute for International Studies in Copenhagen.
