Weaponizing femininity in (digital) war

The Institute of International Relations Prague has the pleasure to invite you to the talk titled 'Weaponizing femininity in (digital) war' with Dr Lisa Gaufman. This seminar is a part of the IIR's flagship series of academic talks: Advances in International Studies.

8. 6. 2023 (16:00)

Jazyk: English Institute of International Relations Prague, Nerudova 257/3

The Russian full-scale invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022 was a culmination of anti-Ukrainian rhetoric that Russian political elite and state-controlled media have been promoting at least since 2013. Apart from accusing Ukraine of being a Neo-Nazi state, pro-Kremlin commentators have espoused a heavily gendered rhetoric describing Ukraine as a loose woman in need of saving by its older brother. Gendered discourse was instrumentalized in Russian foreign policy not only through aggressive masculinity, but also through femininity. The latter, in contrast, sought to downplay the aggressive masculinity associated with fascism and consequently diminish Ukraine’s agency and status compared to Russia. In this talk, Lisa Gaufman will reflect on the different types of gendered constructs that can be weaponized in an (online) war.

Lisa Gaufman is Assistant Professor of Russian Discourse and Politics in the Department of European Languages and Cultures at the University of Groningen. She is the author of Security Threats and Public Perception: Digital Russia and the Ukraine Crisis (Palgrave, 2017) and Everyday Foreign Policy: Performing and Consuming the Russian Nation after Crimea (Manchester University Press, 2023).

Advances in International Studies is the IIR's flagship series of academic talks. We invite both established and emerging scholars who make novel or unfamiliar contributions to our understanding of global politics. Each session will consist of an introductory talk and will be followed by an open discussion in a seminar setting.
