The East is red… again! How the spectres of communism and Russia shape the CEE views of China
The Institute of International Relations is happy to invite you to a seminar "The East is red… again! How the spectres of communism and Russia shape the CEE views of China" with Professor of Chinese politics at the University of Manchester Peter Gries.
13. 9. 2021 (15:00)
Jazyk: English Nerudova 3, Prague
The seminar will focus on the public opinion on China in Central and Eastern European (CEE) countries and China's role as a foreign power in the region. In particular, Peter Gries will discuss the results of a 2020 public opinion survey in six CEE countries and the role of China as a "second eastern power". The communist past of the former Eastern Bloc serves both as a common basis for relations with China and a cautionary tale against future cooperation with a communist superpower. Does the 16+1 platform have any sound prospects for the future?
Peter Gries is the Lee Kai Hung Chair and founding Director of the Manchester China Institute at the University of Manchester, where he is also Professor of Chinese politics. He studies the political psychology of international affairs, with a focus on China and the United States.
Alica Kizeková, Head of Asia Pacific Unit at the CSGR IIR, will chair the seminar.
The event is organised in cooperation with the Sinophone Borderlands research team at the Palacky University, Olomouc. Prior registration is required.
